The three Valley lodges
Yosemite Valley Lodge
The largest hotel in the Valley, with around 240 rooms in a series of low-rise buildings. Closest to Yosemite Falls. Modern hotel amenities (heat, hot showers, full bathrooms, in-room coffee). The most flexible option for last-minute booking. Has a casual restaurant, a bar, and a coffee shop. The free Badger Pass shuttle stops here daily.
The Ahwahnee
Yosemite's grand historic hotel, opened 1927, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stone-and-timber architecture, soaring lobby, the famed Ahwahnee dining room. Premium pricing. About 120 rooms. Books up the furthest in advance — typically months ahead for any winter weekend.
Curry Village
Rustic tent cabins (heated) and wood cabins. Significantly less expensive than the other two lodges. Open seasonally in winter — check operational dates as not all units operate year-round. The shuttle stops here as well.
The free Badger Pass shuttle
During ski season, a free shuttle bus runs from the three Valley lodges to Badger Pass each morning, returning each afternoon. Pickup typically begins around 8:00 AM and the return runs around 4:00 PM, though the exact schedule varies. The shuttle is included for anyone who has booked a lift ticket, lesson, or rental — show your booking confirmation.

The drive (if you don't use the shuttle)
From the Valley, the route is: take Northside Drive or Southside Drive to Highway 41, climb up to Chinquapin junction (about 35 minutes), then turn east on Glacier Point Road for another 5-6 miles. Total drive time in good conditions is about 45-50 minutes. Tire chains likely required in snow conditions.
Trade-offs vs. Yosemite West
- Drive time. Yosemite Valley is roughly 30 minutes further from Badger than Yosemite West. The shuttle solves this — but only if you're on its schedule.
- Dining. The Valley has multiple restaurants and cafés. Yosemite West has none.
- Sightseeing. Walking distance to Yosemite Falls, Lower Yosemite Fall trail, the Visitor Center, and shuttle stops for the rest of the Valley. The Valley is the iconic Yosemite — the place most people picture.
- Cost. Yosemite Valley Lodge rates are comparable to mid-range hotels; the Ahwahnee is premium. Per-room costs are usually higher than Yosemite West, but you avoid grocery logistics.
- Booking flexibility. The Valley has more rooms than Yosemite West has vacation rentals, so last-minute availability is more common.
Best for…
Travelers who want a Yosemite trip that includes more than skiing. If your itinerary is "ski one day, do a winter hike to Yosemite Falls the next, see the Ahwahnee, take photos in the Valley" — the Valley lodges are the right base. If your trip is "ski four days straight" — Yosemite West or Wawona will be a better fit.

All three lodges are operated by Yosemite Hospitality. Book through the official Yosemite lodging site. Reservations open about a year out for the Ahwahnee; the other two lodges have more flexible booking windows.
