What Yosemite West is
Yosemite West is a private residential community inside the boundary of Yosemite National Park. There are roughly 200-250 homes, almost all of them privately owned, with most available as short-term vacation rentals. There's no hotel, no motel, no commercial center — just a quiet neighborhood of cabins set among pines, about 4,000 feet of elevation.
The drive to Badger Pass
From Yosemite West it's roughly 8 miles to Badger Pass, all on Glacier Point Road. The road is plowed in winter (it's the route the ski area depends on) and the drive typically takes 15-20 minutes depending on conditions. Tire chains may be required on snowy days even with all-wheel drive — bring them.
This is the shortest possible commute to the ski hill from any lodging in or near the park. Wawona is 25 minutes. The Yosemite Valley lodges are 45-50 minutes.
What to know before booking
- No groceries or restaurants nearby. The closest store is the small market in Wawona (25 min). Bring everything — food, snacks, drinks, ski gear, paper towels — with you. Most renters do a big grocery stop in Oakhurst on the way in.
- Most rentals have kitchens. Cooking in is the norm. Many properties have hot tubs, fireplaces, and ski-storage areas — premium features that hotel rooms don't offer.
- Internet can be spotty. Some properties have great Wi-Fi, others have almost none. If you need to work remotely, ask before booking.
- Cell coverage is poor. Verizon and AT&T both have weak coverage. Plan for limited cell service throughout your stay.
- It's quiet. Yosemite West is residential and most renters come for the proximity to skiing, not nightlife. There's no town to walk to.
Who Yosemite West works best for
- Families with kids. Kitchens for breakfast, ski-out morning routine, hot tubs in the evening — kid-friendly logistics, especially compared to a single hotel room.
- Multi-day skiers. The proximity pays back over multiple days. A 15-minute commute repeated four mornings is worth a lot.
- Groups. Larger rental homes sleep 6-12 people at significantly lower per-head cost than equivalent hotel rooms.
- Anyone who values quiet. No restaurants and no nightlife is a feature, not a bug, if that's what you're after.
Booking
Yosemite West rentals are listed on the major vacation rental platforms (Vrbo, Airbnb, Booking.com) as well as on local property management sites. Selection is best 2-3 months out for winter weekends — the inventory is finite. Mid-week stays often have last-minute availability.
Other lodging options
If Yosemite West is booked, the next closest options are Wawona (25 min to Badger), the Yosemite Valley lodges (45-50 min, but the free shuttle solves the drive), or vacation rentals outside the park.
